As any Floridian or vacationer with bad luck knows, Florida drivers practically shut their eyes when it starts to rain. You would think that because we have so much of it, we would be seasoned rainy drivers – but we’re terrible at it!
In all fairness though, Florida is not known for it’s good drivers even when it’s dry out. The point is that you are BOUND to get into an accident if you are in Florida for any length of time and even the smallest accidents result in injury, which means you or the other driver better have car insurance.
It might be the angle you were hit, it might be the speed of the other driver, it might be you had an old knee injury and during the accident your knee was slammed into the steering wheel. You might think you’re fine since you aren’t bleeding or nothing is broken. I’m telling you, just give it a couple days before you make that decision. The majority of my clients say they weren’t in any pain right after the accident, but by a few days after, they had neck and back pain that never existed before.
Pain means something is wrong with your body, so whether it’s soft tissue damage to your spine or something more serious, only a doctor can diagnose it – get yourself checked out by one within 14 days of your accident (FYI – you can thank the Florida Legislature for the 14 day clause). Just know if you are outside that 14 day period, you will not have access to the $10,000 in PIP insurance.
If you have not added “Uninsured Motorist Coverage” (UM) to your car insurance policy, we strongly recommend it. The reason being that if you ever need more than $10,000 in treatment, you may have to pay out of pocket for every additional cent and it’s no secret that healthcare costs can be high. So, unless you are Bill Gates or Warren Buffet with money to burn, look at your UM policy – I added one a few years ago.
